Author Guidelines

  1. Please submit an electronic file of the text through this website. The file should be saved in a version compatible with "Word" (.doc, .docx) file types.

  2. Authors must obtain in writing all permissions for the publication of material under copyright and send a copy of this with their submission.

  3. Submissions should be in English and observe usual Australian English conventions of usage, spelling and punctuation. More generally, the MHRA style guide is preferred. 

  4. All tables, maps, photographs, etc., should be scanned in at least 300 dpi, and saved as a .jpg or .png file type with high resolution. Final captions and a clear indication of their preferred location in the text should be provided.

  5. Institutional affiliation, email address or any general acknowledgements may be carried by the first footnote, and appear on the first page. Articles should have six to eight keywords. Articles should also have an abstract, of up to 100 words.

  6. A biographical statement of up to 150 words must be included with your submission. A sample statement, appropriate for this journal, is as follows. 'Ned Kelly (Ph.D.) is the author of Flowers and their mystic symbolism (Stockade Press: 2017). His research interests include alchemy and the folklore of flowers. He is a Senior Lecturer in Alchemy at Eureka University [Australia].' 

  7. Texts submitted to Australian Folklore should not simultaneously be under consideration for another publication.

  8. Articles and reviews are accepted for publication subject to approval by the referees, and available space. Acceptance rates are medium-level. Texts may be edited for style, i.e. the prime concern is consistency - both within the text and with other works in the journal. Every effort will be made, time allowing, to enable contributors' final proofing of plated text.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, DOIs and URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
 

Copyright Notice

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

  1. Copyright of items in their Australian Folklore format, and any associated fees (e.g.CAL), remains the property of the Association. This includes making articles freely available on the journal's website. 
  2. Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (e.g. in institutional repositories or on their website) prior to and during the submission process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work (See The Effect of Open Access).
  3. Authors are welcome to archive their pre-print and post-print pdf copies of their articles under the SHERPA RoMEO 'Green' copyright classification.
  4. Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g. publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal.
