Abstract

The beautiful city of Edinburgh has a squalid past, one not disguised by its Enlightenment image and the fine university. Shock, violence, body-snatching and the occult were significant aspects of the city from c. 1828 to 1832. There are here treated several scholarly ‘fictions’ that expose that past in lurid fashion.
