Abstract

This makes a comparison of approaches and ideas about lyrical material associated with working life in an industrial society. Folklorists were wary of embracing much of this material until the 1930s, and have been arguing about it ever since. Can the definition of folk song proposed by Cecil Sharp a century ago be broadened enough to include this newer breed of song and poetry or do terms such as industrial song and ‘laborlore’ better meet our purpose?
