José Loureiro Fernandes and Brazilian archaeology [José Loureiro Fernandes e a arqueologia brasileira]

The present research encompasses the work of Jose Loureiro Fernandes in Brazilian archaeology. Loureiro Fernandes, although a physician, dedicated his life to innumerous anthropological studies. As part of the Círculo de Estudos Bandeirantes, Museu Paranaense and Universidade Federal do Paraná, Fernandes campaigned for protective legislation for archaeological sites throughout Paraná and Brazil. Loureiro Fernandes was responsible for the creation of the Centro de Ensino e Pesquisas Arqueológicas, the Anthropology Department and the Museu de Arqueologia e Artes Populares at the Universidade do Paraná, thus enabling future archaeological research and the education of archaeologists.
