Abstract

"Capa and canal" ceramic roofing tiles have been used in Brazil since early in the colonization period. The simplicity of the manufacturing process, combined with the lack of standardization and the differences in quality among the manufacturers, helped coin the expression "made on the thigh of slaves". The spread of this saying throughout Brazil is constantly reinforced by journalists and historians who insist on its use.
